Stifters Dinge is a piece composed for five pianos without pianists, a play without actors, a performance without performers. Above all, it is an invitation to the spectators to enter a fascinating space full of sounds and images, a poetic invitation to watch and listen. Central here are the things that often only serve as illustration, but now become the main characters: the curtain, the lighting, the images, the noises, the sounds, the voices, wind and fog, water and ice. The margins become the center, as in Adalbert Stifter, who on his mid-19th-century literary journeys dedicated himself enthusiastically to describing phenomena on the margins of events. He directs his attention to nature and to things that seem strange and unfamiliar to us. Whatever he is not familiar with is simply dubbed a ›thing‹ and is brought to speak in detailed descriptions. He takes his time, and in turn demands that his readers do the same, as if first forced to go through the forest in question while making their way through the text. Stifters Dinge takes this attitude as its point of departure, transforming it into a highly dense atmosphere of images and sounds. Mechanical devices set pianos in motion, entice unusual sounds from pipes, sheet metal, and stones. The work is an encounter with the unfamiliar, with forces beyond our control that are simultaneously alluring and terrifying: a plea that we admit criteria and judgments that are not our own as an authority.
