Jonathan Bepler

Composer Jonathan Bepler was largely self-taught on many instruments before he attended Bennington College, where his studies focused on composition, improvisation, and performance. Bepler’s interest in collaboration and interdisciplinary work was further explored during the twenty years he lived in New York City, before moving to Berlin. His work often involves the co-mingling of seemingly disparate elements, a love of chaos, and a desire for reconciliation. 1996 marks the start of the collaboration with Matthew Barney, as he composed the music to Barneys CREMASTER Cycle. Since 2000 Bepler has frequently worked for theater and dance productions and has collaborated with choreographers including John Jasperse, Sasha Waltz, and Jennifer Lacey, as well as the Glenn Branca Ensemble, the Basel Sinfonietta and the Ensemble Modern, who showed Beplers concert piece Fascia at the Schauspiel Frankfurt in 2006. A multi-channel sound installation for Broken Ensemble was recently exhibited at the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati. His 2008 score for The Rape of the Sabine Women, a collaboration with Swedish artist Ann-Sofi Siden at the Royal Dramatic Theater of Sweden, was shown in Berlin and Stockholm. As in his early compositions, the musical component of River of Fundament is an independent element, which forms the subliminal force and transgressive state within the narrative.
