Wakatt is a choreographic reflection on the fearful time in which we live. In his new creation Serge Aimé Coulibaly investigates the omnipresent fear of the other that has been further stoked by the nationalism running rampant around the globe. Seeing enemies and threats everywhere has activated a destructive mechanism through which the encounters people have with each other – both mental and physical – are determined by fences and borders.
However, is it “natural” to dislike what we do not know? Is it in people’s nature to carry latent violence inside them? And where does this pain come from that makes them shrink into themselves? Coulibaly starts by considering what is beautiful and attractive: things that draw attention and appeal. Because the powers that be in the world seduce people in manipulative ways. Wakatt calls upon them to resist this.
In Kirina the Brussels based choreographer Serge Aimé Coulibaly from Burkina Faso explored migration within the continent of Africa for the Ruhrtriennale 2018. Wakatt has been developed in Mali, Tunisia, Belgium, Germany and Burkina Faso, and will have its world premiere at the Ruhrtriennale 2020.
