Exhibition openings for the Ruhrtriennale in Essen and Duisburg.

15 August 2014

Ehmann/Farocki and Charmatz/Vayssié at the Museum Folkwang in Essen, Melt in the Landschaftspark Duisburg. New work by Gregor Schneider following cancellation of totlast in Duisburg can be seen in Bochum from 29th August in Bochum.

Today at 15.00 hours Culture Minister Ute Schäfer will open the interactive installation Melt by the Brazilian artists Rejane Cantoni and Leonardo Crescenti. This 70 metre long walk-on installation along the Hochofenstraße in the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord is openly accessible to all visitors. Melt is interactive - 50 polished aluminium plates react to the visitors’ movements. At the same time the art work’s reflective surface presents ever-changing images of the impressive industrial architecture of the former smelting works. Melt is an Urbane Künste Ruhr production on behalf of Ruhrtriennale.

On Saturday 16th August at 12.00 hours two exhibitions will open at the Museum Folkwang in Essen:

For their project Labour in a Single Shot Antje Ehmann and Harun Farocki spent three years travelling to cities around the world to make short films with local filmmakers. The task they set themselves was to make a film on the subject of “labour” in a single shot lasting no more than two minutes. During this time 400 films were made in ten cities on five continents.
The Ruhrtriennale will present the first comprehensive showing of Labour in a Single Shot, which is also the last installation Farocki conceived together with his wife Antje Ehmann. Harun Farocki died unexpectedly in July. A further installation, Workers Leaving Their Place of Work in 10 Cities, can be seen as an updated remake of the famous Lumière film from the end of the 19th century. It shows workers in cites around the world leaving their places of work.

Under the title Understanding his work, seeing his films, letting them work two of Harun Farocki’s long-standing friends, the maker of exhibitions Kasper König and the author Diedrich Diederichsen, will take his place for the tumbletalk on Sunday 24 th August at 12.00 hours in the Museum Folkwang.

The video installation Levée at the Museum Folkwang is based on the performance Levée des conflits, which the Musée de la danse brought to Ruhrtriennale 2013, when they performed on the Halde Haniel in Bottrop. Choreographer Boris Charmatz and film-maker César Vayssié developed a film loop, inspired by the sparse spiral shapes of the tip site, which can be seen from Saturday free of charge at the Museum Folkwang. In addition to Levée, Boris Charmatz’s work can also be seen in the world premiere of his dance performance manger from 23rd Septembre at the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum.
