Romeo Castellucci

Romeo Castellucci was born in Cesena in 1960. He graduated in Painting and Set Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. In 1981 he founded the Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio. It is no coincidence that his theater does not require the primacy of literature, but is conceived as a sculpture, rich in music, light, references from the fine arts, and complex machines. Castellucci has created many productions in which he works as the ­author, light designer, director, set and costume designer. He is known around the world as the creator of a theater of holistic perception. In addition, he has published numerous essays on the development of his aesthetics. His work has been featured at numerous theaters and festivals around the world. In 2012 Ruhrtriennale showed the premiere of the specially for Gebläsehalle in Duisburg developed piece FOLK. In 2014 Romeo Castellucci is presenting two world premieres at Ruhrtriennale, Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps as well as Morton Feldman’s Neither. Amongst many other awards, in 1998 he received the Europe Prize New Theatrical Realities. In 2008 Romeo Castellucci is named Artist Associé of the Festival d’Avignon. In 2013 he received the Golden Lion for Life­time Achievement at the Venice Biennale.
