Halde Haniel, Bottrop

Mining for black coal inherently means to bring rocks to the daylight surface. If those rocks are not used otherwise they must be dumped. The waste rock dump Haniel of the working pit Prosper-Haniel is designed as a growing landscape building. On its summit (190 m above sea level), the so-called Bergarena or Mountain Arena with a capacity for about 800 people was constructed in 1999.
