Metropolis: ACTUEL REMIX

Xavier Garcia, Guy Villerd — Fritz Lang, Ritchie Hawtin, Iannis Xenakis Ciné-Concert at Gießhalle

Gießhalle at the Landschaftspark Duisburg is the perfect place for this ciné-concert with an unusual accent. The duo ACTUEL REMIX consisting of the two French musicians, improvisators, and DJs Xavier Garcia and Guy Villerd will play an entirely new soundtrack for Fritz Lang’s silent classic Metropolis (1927/2010) using live electronics and saxophones. The images of the underground mining world in this first of all science fiction films fits perfectly into the raw ambience of this venue. The creators of Metropoliscould not imagine their film without music: it was an integral component from the very beginning and of decisive importance for the overall effect of the film. Since the rediscovery of the film in the 1960s, many musicians working in a wide range of styles and genres have felt the very same thing. For this reason, soundtracks have been composed for the fragmentary, constantly renewed versions of the film over the past decades. For the most recent digital reconstruction of the film, now nearly complete, Garcia and Villerd combine music by Greek avant-garde composer Iannis Xenakis and the DJ and techno producer Ritchie Hawtin in a live remix.
