Le Sacre du Printemps

Igor Strawinsky, MusicAeterna, Teodor Currentzis

Closing production Le Sacre du Printemps without Romeo Castellucci. Instead, the 100 piece orchestra MusicAeterna from Perm under conductor Teodor Currentzis will present a special concert.

The Ruhrtriennale 2013's closing production Le Sacre du Printemps has to take place without the Italian director Romeo Castellucci. Despite the strenuous efforts of all the partners involved, the project cannot be realised in the form in which it was announced. The production, which should have premiered last weekend as part of the Manchester International Festival, was definitively cancelled there.

Heiner Goebbels, Artistic Director of the Ruhrtriennale 2012-2014: "The production cannot be realised this year in the manner in which Romeo Castellucci conceived it for Manchester, the Ruhrtriennale and the Perm State Opera. New productions always involve risks and challenges. That this brilliant artistic idea could not be realised in the planned timeframe is a source of regret for all concerned. We are, however, delighted that Teodor Currentzis and the world renowned MusicAeterna orchestra from Perm are willing to present Le Sacre du Printemps in concert form in the Bochum Jahrhunderthalle 100 years after its World Premiere in Paris."

The programme for both evening concerts will set Stravinsky's masterpiece in an exciting musical context.

»›What did you love most in Russia?‹ ››The violent Russian spring that seemed to begin in an hour and was like the whole earth cracking.«—Igor Stravinsky

The 1913 premiere of Igor Strawinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps erupted with violent power into the world of music and dance. While the premiere of the ballet at Théâtre Champs-Élysées was a scandal that met with a tumultuous reaction, the work then experienced great success in a concert performance. Since the early 1950s, choreographers have repeatedly sought to engage with the piece, using it to test their own dance and theatrical conceptions.
