London’s Arditti Quartet, celebrated around the world for its contemporary music repertoire, gives an impression of the aesthetic variety and richness of string quartets in the 20th century (by performing three very different masterpieces).

Alban Berg Streichquartett op. 3 (1910/11)

Witold Lutoslawski Streichquartett (1964)

Helmut Lachenmann Zweites Streichquartett ›Reigen seliger Geister‹ (1989)

At this year’s Ruhrtriennale, Monday evenings are dedicated to concerts held at Essen’s Maschinenhaus, Zeche Carl, with four evenings of classical chamber music and two evenings of improvisation where the audience can participate up close in the process of music’s emergence and creation. The balance of acoustics in this precious industrial space promotes an open exchange between musicians and listeners
