A woman, a man, a violin, and 27 minutes of music. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Boris Charmatz explore, listen to, and dance Johann Sebastian Bach’s Partita No. 2. After En Atendant und Cesena, the grande dame of contemporary dance will now collaborate with her French colleague Boris Charmatz. Together, they enter the complex contrapuntal field of relations within the partita. A suite of sublimated dance movements—Allemanda, Corrente, Sarabanda, Giga— raises in the closing Ciaccona to 32 variations on a bass line:—there is hardly anything so beautiful, and gripping to be found in all of music history: a true moment of pure genius.

What might this Baroque piece mean for two choreographers, for dance? And what in turn might dance reveal about Bach’s abstract musical figures? Or does dance in the end—quite unspectacularly—retreat behind the perfect form, surveying step by step and illuminating the construction?

French violinist Amandine Beyer, who specializes on creating an authentic sound, will play the piece live. We can expect one of the most sublime encounters of the coming season: a pas de deux for three soloists.
