The French dancer, choreographer, and curator Boris Charmatz subverts expectations and formal laws, breaking with routines and expanding the space of choreography, as can be seen in his masterpiece enfant. Depending on whether he works in a theater, a museum, a soccer field, or, as he does here, at the pinnacle of a HaldeHaniel, each new place, each shift of perspective inscribes new meanings into the performance. In this way, Levée des conflits (The Lifting of Conflicts)—oscillates between sculpture, installation, dance, and contrat social.

Levée des conflits is the performance of a fascinating paradox: strictly organized like a canon and yet as chaotic as a twisted knot. A solo performance becomes a labyrinthine image of movement, a stereotypical gesture grows into a powerful vortex. The dancers spell out one after the other a dense vocabulary of cultural and historically charged gestures, developing, imitating, repeating a movement that is then absorbed by the next, until all come together in an overwhelming, furious composition. This choreography is always about the individual voice and the chorus at the same time, an immanent uprising and immediate paralysis, structure and the void, thesis and antithesis, crisis and utopia. All too complex? No, simply fantastic.
