Stephan Buchberger
Stephan Buchberger, born in Frankfurt am Main, first trained as a bookseller, then studying German literature and theater studies. After working as an assistant to Christof Nel, Michael Simon, and Peter Mußbach, he has been collaborating with Heiner Goebbels since 1990 as an assistant, dramaturge, or assistant director in many productions, including Surrogate Cities (1994), Schwarz auf Weiß (1996), Eislermaterial (1998), Max Black (1998), Landschaft mit entfernten Verwandten (2002), and Eraritjaritjaka (2004). Since 1994, Buchberger has been a freelance dramaturge and production director working with various organizations, including Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble musikFabrik, and the Berliner Philharmoniker. He is a regular guest at international festivals such as Vienna’s Festwochen, Holland Festival, Paris’ Festival d’Automne, Edinburgh Festival, and New York’s Lincoln Center Festival. From 2005 to 2011, he served as artistic director at Ensemble Modern, working with composers such as Steve Reich & Beryl Korot, Olga Neuwirth, Benedict Mason, Peter Eötvös, George Benjamin.
Under the artistic directorship of Heiner Goebbels, Stephan Buchberger is music dramaturge for the Ruhrtriennale, 2012–14.
