Marketplace 76 is a kaleidoscopic story in three parts. The basic scenario is as dramatic as it is quickly told: a tragic accident brings several residents of a village to their deaths. The tragedy weighs heavily on those left behind. Mourning dominates their everyday lives until one day a boat falls from the sky. This new piece for Needcompany was written and created by Jan Lauwers. Together with the three composers Rombout Willems Maarten Seghers, and Hans Petter Dahl, he developed it into a musical scenario in which the village dwellers report in an epic form of the events that they experienced.

Language, dance, and song are interwoven with one another, follow one another, and bring the audience into the events to comment on the illusions generated in the very next moment, breaking through them or exaggerating them in a grotesque fashion. Marketplace 76 touches on the dark areas of human life and compares them in a constant alternation with excessive love, happiness, friendship, and the will to survive. In this way, an intense experience is created for the actors and audience, in which the spectators are challenged in ever new ways to question their own perspective. Marketplace 76 is an impressive narrative about a village and how its residents are captured by events and nonetheless survive in a heroic way.

Since the mid 1980s, Jan Lauwers & Needcompany have been developing a unique theater aesthetic that moves along the lines dividing theater, dance, performance, and fine art. The international ensemble has enjoyed great success with its oft multi-lingual productions at the Salzburger Festspiele and Festival d’Avignon, and are currently artists in residence at Burgtheater Wien.

About the videotrailer (2nd Video) by Ana Brzezińska:

I WANT (NO) REALITY is a personal story from a young Polish Filmmaker Ana Brzezińska about the necessity of art, the price you have to pay for it & the search for the long forgotten secret of having a good life.

A sensual and entertaining glimpse at a 5-year relationship of the director with a unique international theater ensemble Needcompany – a group of people dedicated to following their own vision of reality & willing to take all the risks and consequences it's going to take.

Their story dates back to 1980s when in Belgium, a country embodying the very idea of European integration and yet being torn by its own internal divisions, a visual artist Jan Lauwers decided to create a non-commercial theater company.

His sought a way to tell stories that one cannot tell alone, and a form which was not meant for sale. Together with a choreographer Grace Ellen Barkey he managed to create an international, multicultural creative melting pot. Today, Needcompany is one of the most popular & groundbreaking companies in Europe, defining new standards in theater and performative arts.

We believe that there is a reason behind their success, perhaps more important than mere artistic efficiency. We share the belief that without love, trust and courage to face the unknown, every human activity becomes vain.
