Concert at Jahrhunderthalle

Ligeti, Shostakovich, Bochumer Symphoniker, Steven Sloane

The program of the Bochumer Symphoniker for Ruhrtriennale 2012 combines orchestral works that could scarcely have a more contrary aesthetic approach. Ligeti's Atmosphères (1961) open a new sonic universe that brings the listener with a continuum from the most tender sounds to passages of an overwhelming acoustic fullness into a complex musical labyrinth. In his Seventh Symphony, composed twenty years before Dmitri Shostakovich adapted the musical language of Mahler to his time in the situation of Siege of Leningrad by the Germans and in the same time the demands of Stalin and the party on his work.
