The concert performed by MCO is dedicated entirely to the music of Charles Ives (1874 - 1954). Ives' music, which he composed in his free time as a successful insurance businessman, work in a surprisingly un-academic way with various tonal systems and quotations from American folk songs, hymns, and marches. Ives' songs were often conceived for the various possibilities of common theater orchestras at the time. The arrangements by Georg Friedrich Haas and Toshio Hosokawa attempt to give the songs their original sharp edge, which was often lost in the piano versions in favor of singability.
