At the age of ten, the boy shepherd Sherap Sangpo is identified as the reincarnation of a high-ranking Lama, a Tulku from Dolpo, one of the uppermost regions of Nepal. He studies in a monastery in India for 16 years and then returns to his homeland Nepal, in order to take up his calling as the spiritual leader of the Tibetan Dolpo. This film accompanies the young Tulku on his return journey to this inaccessible mountain region. For the Tulku this journey mingles joy at his return home with concern and humility at the prospect of his new appointment.
