CalArts Plays Itself
The famous American Art School guests at Pact Zollverein A Festival in the Series »Nostalgia for the Future«

What are the sounds of sea anemones and sports stadia, of rural Tennessee and New York, Bangkok or Bangalore? How can a work of art be both representation and an intervention in a specific space? How can a work of art generate experience and get to know its observer in the process? How can a performance be created out of its performers’ heartbeats?
These are only some of the questions which around 20 selected students from the Walt Disney-founded and now world famous California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) are investigating. With a unique interdisciplinary festival programme the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), »the most important contemporary art cell in the USA« (Süddeutsche Zeitung), will present itself in Europe for the first time. PACT Zollverein will open every one of its doors and put all its spaces at their disposal: sculptures, sound and video installations, films and photography will take up residence for four days in the studios, corridors, showers, foyer and the terrace of the former pithead baths. On stage, the various faculties will present programmes of selected film, dance, music and performance, while the art faculty will show another exhibition on the world cultural heritage site. Many of the artworks will be created on site and engage with issues of social interaction, the urban environment and society as a whole, as well as with specific features of the Zollverein complex, its architecture and surroundings. Over a four day period the festival offers unique insights into and perspectives on the art of tomorrow and provides an opportunity for visitors to discover and enter into dialogue with emerging international artists.

Los Angeles Plays Itself
Documentary, USA 2003, Written and Directed by Thom Andersen
Of the cities in the world, few are depicted in and mythologized more in film and television than the city of Los Angeles. In this documentary, Thom Andersen examines in detail the ways the city has been depicted, both when it is meant to be anonymous and when itself is the focus. Written by Kenneth Chisholm
