William Forsythe
grew up in New York and began his training in Florida with Nolan Dingman and Christa Long. He danced with the Joffrey Ballet and later with the Stuttgart Ballet, becoming their resident choreographer in 1976. In the following seven years he created new works for the Stuttgart ensemble and for ballet companies in Munich, The Hague, London, Basel, Berlin, Frankfurt am Main, Paris, New York and San Francisco. In 1984 he began a 20-year term as Director of the Frankfurt Ballet. After this was dissolved in 2004, Forsythe formed a new, independent ensemble. With support from the regions of Saxony and Hesse, the cities of Dresden and Frankfurt am Main and private sponsors, The Forsythe Company GmbH was founded. The company has regular venues in Dresden and Frankfurt am Main in addition to numerous international touring engagements. Forsythe’s recent works have been developed and performed exclusively by this company while his earlier works occupy a central place in the repertoire of practically every leading ballet company in the world.
