Orhan Pamuk

was born in Istanbul on 7th June 1952 and grew up in a middle class family.  Before he turned to writing he studied architecture and journalism.  His first two novels Cevdet Bey and Sessiv Ev, currently being prepared for publication by Hanser, were awarded leading Turkish literary prizes.  Today he is acclaimed as one of the most significant living Turkish writers, whose works are published all around the world.  He has been the recipient of various awards over the years.  These include Prix Médicis étranger in 2005, the Ricarda Huch Prize and the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade.  In 2006 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
