    Jahrhunderthalle Bochum

The story of Bochum's Jahrhunderthalle begins in the year 1903, when the monumental steel structure was erected on the site of the Bochumer Verein für Bergbau und Guss-Stahlfabrikation, between the works railway and the blast furnace plant. Its design had caused a sensation the previous year when it was presented at the trade and industry exhibition in Düsseldorf.

    Casablanca Cinema, Bochum

1957, the Casablanca, the then called Intimes, was inaugurated with the screening of Ingmar Bergmann’s motion picture Wilde Erdbeeren. The rustic building of the fifties is surrounded by pubs, clubs and taverns of the so-called »Bermuda triangle«. From the beginning, the Casablanca has tried to establish itself aside from the film business as well.

    Gießhalle, Landschaftspark Duisburg Nord

The three blast furnaces of the Aktiengesellschaft für Hüttenbetrieb, founded by August Thyssen in the north of Duisburg in 1902, began production the following year. The Gießhalle (casting bay) is partly open to the air and forms part of the blast furnace arena 1. When the smelting works were still in use, the iron in the casting bay would be ‘run-off’ approximately every two hours.

    Maschinenhalle Zeche Zweckel, Gladbeck

At first glance, the machine hall of the former Zweckel colliery built in 1909 does not look much like an industrial plant. 126 metres long, the symmetrically designed building reminds one more of a palace. This is hardly surprising given that the monarchist Prussian state which commissioned the hall had a particular interest in asserting its own claim to authority.
