Heaven and Hell

Marianne Faithfull, Carla Bozulich, Marc Ribot & Friends

Concert
Musical director
Duration
2 hours 30 minutes, an interval

If the expression ‘diva’ describes the supra-natural greatness and impact of greatly-admired artists, then it can definitely be applied to the fascinating power of Marianne Faithfull.  Whether she appears as actor (Irina Palm), as interpreter or songwriter – her statements are always bigger than life.  Paradoxically however, Marianne Faithfull’s charisma does not feed on the grandiose superlatives of showbusiness.  In her touching, acerbic and poetic humour, she is much more likely to hold forth on the not so pleasant side to life. Like all the greats of her craft, she makes each song she sings her own.  She defines music – which is why young songwriters in particular want to work with her.

When the New York songwriter, writer and performance artist Carla Bozulich and Marianne Faithfull and Marc Ribot meet, something new is bound to be created.  Bozulich performs her own dazzling songs as a heavily-theatrical installation.  Her voice and her atmospheric compositions belong to one of the most unusual and haunting events of the American scene.

This concert with Marianne Faithfull, Marc Ribot and the New York songwriter, author and performance artist Carla Bozulich, is bound to be an original.

The series Century of Song has been produced by the Ruhrtriennale.
