Sergej Newski

Sergej Newski was born in 1972 in Moscow. He completed his studies in music theory at the Music Academy of the national Tchaikovsky-Konservatorium and went on to study composition with Jörg Herchet at the Hochschule für Musik in Dresden as well as with Friedrich Goldmann at the Universität der Künste Berlin. He stayed there from 2000 to 2005 studying music theory and music pedagogy with Hartmut Fladt. Since 1995 his music has been performed at the most important festivals for new music, including the Donaueschinger Musiktagen, Wien Modern, Éclat, the Gaudeamus Music Week, the Berliner Festwochen, the Musica Viva Munich, the Territoryfest Moscow, as well as at Maerzmusik and UltraSchall. He has been commissioned by Klangforum Wien, the Scharoun Ensemble, the Neuen Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, the SWR, Deutschlandradio, SR, the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Deutschen Staatsoper Unter den Linden, and the Norwegian Ministry of Culture.
Interpreters of his music include Klangforum Wien, the Neuen Vokalsolisten, the Ensemble Modern as well as the Nieuw Ensemble, the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble. Interpreters of his music comprise soloists and performers such as Teodoro Anzellotti, Natalia Pschenitschnikowa, Daniel Gloger and Michael Lentz, as well as conductors such as Peter Rundel, Johannes Kalitzke, Teodor Currentzis and Vladimir Jurowski.
In 2006 Sergej Newski was awarded first prize at the composition competition of the Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart. Moreover he has been awarded many bursaries, including from the Villa Massimo/Casa Baldi, Villa Serpentara, Künstlerhof Schreyahn, Cité Internationale des Arts Paris. Sergej Newski lives in Berlin.
