Ernst Jandl

The poet Ernst Jandl was born on 1st August 1925 in Vienna. After being freed from an American prisoner of war camp, Jandl studied German and English Literature and attained his doctorate in 1950 with a dissertation on Arthur Schnitzler. Jandl was a member of the ‘Wiener Gruppe’, publishing many experimental sound poems, language poems and prose pieces. He made his name with his poetry collection laut und luise (published in 1966). His poetry won several awards including the Georg-Büchner-Preis and the Kleist-Preis. Ernst Jandl died on 9th June 2000.
