Christoph Poppen

Conductor, soloist, chamber musician and educationalist Christoph Poppen was born in Münster. In 1995 he was made conductor and artistic director of the Münchener Kammerorchester and in 2006 he became principal conductor of the Saarbrücken Rundfunk Sinfonieorchesters. In 2003 he was made Chair of Violin and Chamber Music at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich. Christoph Poppen has been head conductor of theDeutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern since its foundingin the 2007/8 season. Alongside his job as head conductor, Poppen is also much in demand as a guest conductor and has appeared with orchestras such as the Bamberg Symphony, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, Staatskapelle Dresden, Detroit Symphony, hr-Sinfonieorchester, Orquestra Sinfonica do Estado de Sao Paulo, Indianapolis Symphony, SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden and Freiburg as well as the Camerata Salzburg. Christoph Poppen’s extensive discography covers works by composers such as Tigran Mansurian, Sofia Gubaidulina, Karl Amadeus Hartmann, Giacinto Scelsi as well as Mozart, and Schubert, several of the recordings have been released on ECM Records. As a soloist he has won many prizes at national and international violin competitions.
