Introduction before each performance at 7:30 pm

In Zeitung, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker sets out once again to research the relationship between music and dance, between melody and physical movement. The stage: a wide, bright, boarded rectangle through which runs a black, button-like stripe.  The nine dancers from ROSAS move either as soloists, or in duos or trios, to piano music by Bach, Schönberg and Webern – interpreted live by Alain Franco – as well as recordings of works by Schönberg and Webern recorded by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Pierre Boulez. In an interplay between construction and improvisation, they repeat interpretations in order to bridge effortlessly the chasm between one incompatible composer and the next. Without ignoring the autonomy of composition and choreography, they search for a movement-language that gives form to the music.

Zeitung attempts to shine a fresh light on things we think we know by taking them out of their historical context and their original social reality, and by allowing the dancers to interpret them within their own histories. The result is a dance-reportage in which the enlightenment becomes a modern experiment, and in which the present gives voice to the past through individual musical and dance interpretation.

A guest performance arranged by the PACT Zollverein/Tanzlandschaft Ruhr for the RuhrTriennale, Zeitung is a co-production between ROSAS with De Munt/La Monnale (Brussels), Théâtre de la Ville (Paris) and MC2 (Grenoble). Supported by the Flemish government. Sponsored by the state minister-president of NRW.
