Excellent results for the season 2008

During the six festival weeks the Triennale was once again able to emphasize its importance as one of the great European festivals – with eight World premieres, three German premieres, seven exclusive concerts as well as many further productions such as the "Kreationen".

After the death of prospective artistic director Marie Zimmermann in April 2007, Jürgen Flimm and his team Andrea Kaiser, Ulli Stepan and Thomas Wördehoff agreed to run the RuhrTriennale for a further season – together with manager Jürgen Krings.

Marie Zimmermann’s occupation with the »foreign« was to be the theme of this 4th season: Aus der Fremde (From Afar).

All in all 650 international artists took part at this year’s RuhrTriennale. More than 45.000 people came to see the 104 Triennale-shows. This leads to an excellent attendance rate of 83% for the season 2008. Over 200 journalists from 18 countries reported from the eleven venues in Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, Gladbeck and Mülheim.

Also outside of the Ruhr district the festival presented itself: In July the RuhrTriennale production of Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s Die Soldaten appeared at the Lincoln Center Festival, New York. David Pountney’s greatly acclaimed staging, which was shown in the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum in 2006 and 2007, was celebrated in the Armory Hall in Manhattan by more than 6000 spectators.

In January 2009 the Opéra de Lyon will show Willy Decker’s highly praised staging of Frank Martin’s Le vin herbé, which had it’s premiere in the Gebläsehalle Duisburg in 2007.

Willy Decker is the artistic director of the RuhrTriennale 2009-2011.

The next season will begin in August 2009.
