Sue Buckmaster

Sue is the Artistic Director of Theatre-Rites and the fourth generation of theatre practitioners in her family.

She has many years' experience as a director, puppetry specialist and teacher. Before joining Theatre-Rites in 1997 as a puppetry specialist, Sue had worked with a wide and diverse range of companies including the National Theatre, Complicite, Royal Shakespeare Company, the Young Vic, Sadler's Wells, the South Bank Centre, Lyric Hammersmith, Leicester Haymarket, Opera Circus, Graeae, Tara, Theatre-Centre, Pop-Up Theatre, the Crafts Council and the Puppet Centre.

For Theatre-Rites Sue has created 9 site-specific productions including Hospitalworks which was commissioned by Polka Theatre, London and Theater der Welt, Stuttgart and 7 touring shows, including the 2007 production of Mischief, commissioned by Sadler's Wells. Most recently Sue has directed a new Theatre-Rites production, Lighten Up which was commissioned by the Unicorn Theatre in London.

She has an MA in Contemporary Theatre Practice from Essex University, which included a thesis on The Psychoanalytic Study of the Power of the Puppet.
