The play is set on the eve of the American Civil War. In the house of Broderick, a plantation owner, a small group of people is awaiting further developments. Like a world tribunal, they discuss in depth matters off politics, slavery and the future of the country. However, they wilfully ignore what they should really be addressing, coming to terms with their own feelings. South (Sud) was one of the first works Andrea Breth directed at the Schaupielhaus Bochum, and was invited to take part in the Berlin Theatertreffen in 1987.
