The Breton bagpiper Erwan Keravec has rescued the bagpipes from folklore and turned them into a respected instrument for contemporary music.
After the 13 new works in Nu Piping #1, for which Keravec was inspired by young international composers and the trio VOX (Nu Piping #2) with four more works for soprano, baritone and bagpipes, Keravec recently assembled an unconventional quartet of four different kinds of Breton double reed instrument.
SONNEURS ERWAN KERAVEC consist of the classic duo of the bombarde and binioù kozh (“ancient bagpipe”), the Highland bagpipe that only emigrated from Scotland to Brittany during the last century and its more recent development, the trélombarde. This international programme contains pieces by Bernard Cavanna and Samuel Sighicelli, Otomo Yoshihide and Susumu Yoshida, Zad Moultaka and Wolfgang Mitterer. With SONNEURS, Keravec is stretching cultural traditions. This is music that sounds raw and full of timbres, dazzling and powerful. Music that sounds like nothing you have heard before!
