Ehemalige Kirche St. Barbara

Duisburg-Rheinhausen

The St. Barbara Church in Duisburg-Rheinhausen that was deconsecrated in 2011 was constructed in the early 1960s on the former works site belonging to Hütten- und Bergwerke Rheinhausen AG. Designed by the architect Toni Hermanns, who was also responsible for other church and administrative buildings in the Ruhr region, and with a hyperbolic and parabolic reinforced concrete roof construction considered pioneering in its time, it represents a significant example of the utopian architecture of the post-war period. The church that was named after the patron state of mineworkers for the Catholic parish of Duisburg-Hochemmerich is located in the centre of workers’ housing very close to the place where in the late 1980s Krupp workers started their protests against the closure of their steelworks.
