Auditorium Maximum

Ruhr-Universität Bochum

The Auditorium Maximum (Audimax) forms the architectural center of the listed campus ensemble of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Built between 1971 and 1974 according to plans by Hentrich, Petschnigg and Partners, it is considered one of the most important educational buildings in German post-war history and was awarded the title of "Big Beautiful Building" in 2018. As the first new university to be founded in the Federal Republic of Germany in the midst of the coal crisis in 1962, the Ruhr-Universität Bochum marks the beginning of the structural change from a coal and steel industry to a knowledge society, a process that continues to this day and came to a symbolic end with the last pit closure in Bottrop at the end of 2018. The Audimax, with its up to 1,700 circularly arranged seats in characteristic orange, serves mainly as a venue for representative events. For some years now, however, the Audimax has also been used again as a lecture hall in the regular teaching activities of the university due to the high number of students.
