Musiktheater im Revier, Gelsenkirchen
The Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen, often abbreviated to MiR, opened in 1959 and has been managed by Chief Executive Michael Schulz since the 2008/09 season. In constructing the theatre, architect and urban planner Werner Ruhnau followed medieval building models in uniting all the arts, integrating the work of visual artists to create a Gesamtkunstwerk that was quite visionary 50 years ago and still seems remarkably modern today. The ‘MiR’ is regarded as one of the most significant theatre buildings in Germany from the post-war period and brings together the delicate tubular sculptures of Norbert Kricke, the kinetic works of Jean Tinguely, Robert Adams’ white concrete relief outside the entrance, the relief by Paul Dierkes on the curved wall of the auditorium and the world’s largest monochromes, Yves Klein’s sponge reliefs in “Gelsenkirchen Blue”. Its glass façade acts like a thin membrane enabling a flowing transition between architectural space and the city outside and is an essential element of the architecture in the so-called international style of the 20th century.
