Hans Magnus Enzensberger’s essay on migration was written in 1994. It was prompted by the persistent attacks on people seeking asylum in the newly united Germany. In this astute text Enzensberger gives an incisive explanation of how nations and cultures have been based on mixing and migration since time immemorial. It carries weight above all due to the sober nature of its clear, reserved but nevertheless empathetic perspective. Norbert Lammert, who alerted us to the topicality of this text, will deliver a reading of it in a matinee.
Je heftiger sich eine Zivilisation gegen eine äußere Bedrohung zur Wehr setzt, je mehr sie sich einmauert, desto weniger hat sie am Ende zu verteidigen.“
