How reasonable is it to immediately stop eating mangoes from Peru and harvest vegetables from our cosy gardens instead, to finally spend quality time with our children rather than slogging away on a never-ending treadmill?

But wait ­­– doesn’t having a child cause more environmental damage than anything else? On average a baby requires 5,000 nappy changes – and that’s just a fraction of the waste one baby generates. Then why not use cloth nappies? But where does the cotton come from and what about the water they will use? Then maybe we shouldn’t have any children – or aren’t there hi tech carbon neutral nappies by now? Can’t we just keep going and put our hope in the power of technical innovation?

And what about people who have no gardens, no children and no money that they can use to be able to claim to be living the »right« life as opposed to the wrong one? Can economic growth be uncoupled from the consumption of resources – and to what extent can this demand be separated from social issues in our capitalist society? Should we rely on sustainable resources and chop down our forests or should we protect domestic forestry and rely on Siberia and Brazil as sources of timber? How much room do we have for manoeuvre? And how the hell are we supposed to live?
