In their German-Turkish shared taxi and itinerant music theatre, the opera dolmuş, two singers and three musicians from the Komische Oper Berlin travel through the Ruhr region with their crew – most of whom have some experience of migration – with love in their hearts and looking for home. Until now the opera dolmuş’ musical voyages have been confined to Berlin, but now it arrives in this region, one that has been shaped by a long and rich tradition of intercultural co-habitation and whose character offers a model for Europe in both the present and the future.
They bring with them arias, duets and instrumental numbers from key works of the operatic repertoire as well as songs from outside the classical canon that are both emotional and packed with humour. These share a central theme that unites people across national and city borders: of home, homesickness and the issue of belonging. Is it possible to think, the feel and to be at home in more than one home or more than one world?
With the opera dolmuş there is no podium and the boundary between the artists and the audience is a porous one: everyone shares the same space. The opera dolmuş will visit community centres, suburban offices and other places where opera has never gone before. After the performance both artists and public can interact informally and will be able to discuss what they have experienced.
Admission free, seats can be reserved via the Tickethotline T +49 (0) 221 28 02 10.
Seats are limited, the exact location will be released after the reservation.
