Two words whose meanings open entire worlds: Medea (Greek: Mḗdeia “she who knows a plan”, also: child-killer, shaman, demi-goddess). And matrix (Greek: mētra, hystera / Latin: uterus “womb”). According to the millennia-old myth, Medea is the woman and mother who destroyed that which she has given birth to – with which the bloody circle of her life ends. Her name describes by proxy the archaic principle of other nature who takes what she has herself created.

The world premiere ‘MEDEA.MATRIX’ by Susanne Kennedy and Markus Selg puts none of the traditional Medea dramas on stage, instead it devises a cosmos of its own between theatre and art installation. In the “matrix” the ancient ideas of the mother, the womb and the mother animal are literally combined with the technical patterns of order of our current age. The space itself becomes a participant: as a place in which something grows which can formulate and take shape; here language and sound, texts and images are all overlaid. The idea of a bodily pregnancy is combined with that of the birth of tragedy: the origin of theatre grows up out of the murder of one’s own life. A mythical-metaphysical ritual.
