To tinder or not to tinder? Will the digital world soon be our most important route to having sex? In future will we only have virtual forms of sexual intercourse, using 3D glasses and skin sensors?
According to a recent British study, the ‘National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles’ (2014), people in all prosperous nations are having significantly less sex than they did a couple of decades ago. Though sex is omnipresent in our media and in our society, we seem to do it a lot less with each other. We don’t go to bed with each other now, but with our laptops and smartphones. Personal fantasies and real sexual relationships are becoming ever more divergent.
The Flemish-Dutch actors’ collective Wunderbaum and best-selling author Arnon Grunberg examine clues to the sex of the future. They probe the limits of our sexual desires and plunge into an erotic science fiction fantasy. They visit websites, interview young people, try out virtual sex toys and construct characters who live in a new intimate dimension. Arnon Grunberg’s text is based on his personal experiences in the French naturist and swingers’ village Cap d'Agde.
‘The Future of Sex’ is a play about desire, gratification and abstinence. It shows the debauched lust of a Marquis de Sade, clinical avatar sex and everything in between. Arnon Grunberg: “Sexual liberation is a myth. We cannot liberate the prisoner within ourselves, though perhaps we can allow him a breath of fresh air.”
