Benny Claessens

Benny Claessens (°1981) was born in Antwerp and went to Studio Herman Teirlinck to study acting. In 2003 he debuted as an actor at Toneelhuis Antwerpen. Under the directions of Luk Perceval, he played in ‘Death of a Salesman’ and ‘Turista’, a coproduction of Wiener Festwochen and Schaubühne Berlin.

Asides he worked with director such as Josse De Pauw, Tom Jansen, Bart Meuleman en Wim Vandekeybus and he acted in films from the directors Guido Henderickx en Britta Hosmann. In 2006 he started his own theatre company ‘Eisbär’. In 2008 he collaborated with Jan Decorte and Lies Pauwels during the Zürcher-Theaterspektakel. For his role in ‘Ritter, Dene, Voss’ he was awarded with an Arlecchino in 2009, the most important Dutch award for a supporting actor. The following year he performed in ‘Lisi Estaras’ ‘Primero-Erchst’ a les ballets C de la B production, directed by Alain Platel. In 2010 Benny Claessens joined the ensemble of the Münchner Kammerspiele. Together with Risto Kübar he wrote his first play in 2013 which they named ‘Spectacular Lightshows of which u don’t see the effect’.

In 2015 Claessens joined the NTGent ensemble. In the season 2015-2016 he performed in Accattone, De kersentuin and Learning How to Walk, which he also directed. This year he will be part of Die Fremden.
