Sebastian Freytag

Sebastian Freytag was born in Hannover in 1978. He studied painting at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf beginning in 1998 with Jan Dibbets and Gerhard Merz and from 2000 to 2005 studied philosophy and art history at Düsseldorf’’s Heinrich-Heine-Universität. Freytag’s works reflect on the medium of painting, in particular mural painting, and are shaped by influences from art history that culminate in direct adaptations and quotations. For his installations, in part highly graphic, architecture and observations in the cityscape are a key point of reference. For several years now, he has been working on interventions in public space: collaborations with the art collection of Ruhruniversität Bochum (Echo, 2009), Wilhelm-Hack-Museum in Ludwigshafen (I Love Aldi, 2011), Museum van Bommel van Dam in Venlo (Mapping the Landscape, 2012), and Dortmunder Kunstverein (Werkstein, 2014).
