Mika Kares

The Finnish bass Mika Kares studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. In the early years of his outstanding carrier he was a member of the ensemble of Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and he quickly established himself as one of the most interesting basses of his generation. Thanks to invitations for roles such as Sarastro, Commendatore, Daland, Fasolt, Hunding, Mefistofele (Boito) , Raimondo, Oroveso, Attila, Massimiliano (I Masnadieri) and Filippo II he has been a guest in many of the most important opera houses and festivals, among others in Munich, Dresden, Barcelona, Valencia, Paris, Helsinki, Bologna, Parma, Savonlinna, Hong Kong, Seattle, NY, Salzburg and Vienna: He has worked with renowned conductors like Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Metha, Teodor Currentzis and Marc Minkowski.

Mika Kares vast concert repertoire includes works like Verdi’s Messa di Requiem, Dvořák’s Stabat mater, Mussorgsky’ Songs and Dances of Death, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony , Shostakovick’s 13th and 14th Symphony and Songs of the forest, Mozart’s Requiem and Haydn’s Creation. He has e.g. worked with the Wiener Philarmoniker, Helsinki Philharmonics, the RTVE in Madrid, the Copenhagen Philharmonics and the Beethoven Orchester in Bonn.

Mika Kares' discography includes the price winning Naivé-recording of der Fliegende Holländer / Daland (Teatro Comunale di Bologna), who won among others the Diapason d’Or last year.
