Leigh Melrose


Leigh Melrose has carved out a formidable reputation for the performance of new works and dramatic 20th century repertoire. He has given many world premieres including Kalitzke’s Die Besessenen at Theater an der Wien, MacMillan’sThe Sacrifice at Welsh National Opera, and Carter’s On Conversing with Paradise at the Aldeburgh Festival (released on Bridge Records and nominated for a Gramophone Award).

Recent highlights include his acclaimed performance as Wozzeck in a new production for English National Opera, Traveller in a new production of Death in Venice at Teatro Real, the world premiere of Solaris at Theatre de Champs Elysees, Lausanne and Lille, the UK premiere of Luca Francesconi’s Quartett at Royal Opera House, Escamillo at ENO, Ned Keene Peter Grimes at ENO, Vlaamse Opera and Oviedo, Birtwistle's Gawain with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Noye's Fludde with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Zimmerman's Requiem fur einen jungen Dichter at Alte Oper Frankfurt and at the Philarmonie in Paris.

Future highlights include the lead role in Theatre of the World, a world premiere by Louis Andriessen at Dutch National Opera and Los Angeles Philharmonic, Et in Terra Pax with the NTR in Netherlands and his role debut as Stolzius in Zimmermann’s Die Soldaten at Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires.
