The American choreographer William Forsythe is the first artist to utilizethe entire space available in the Große Hallein the new building for the Museum Folkwangdesigned by David Chipperfield.

The Ruhrtriennale realisation of Nowhere and Everywhere at the Same Time No. 2 marksan entirely new chapter in the developmentof this choreographic work. Originally createdfor a solo dancer and 40 pendulums in anabandoned building on New Yorks historicHigh Line, the installation has been continuouslydeveloped in contexts as diverse as themonumental industrial architecture of theTurbine Hall of the Tate Modern, and thehistorical setting provided by the Arsenale ofthe Venice Biennale. This new edition preservesand privileges two central interests inForsythe's oeuvre: counterpoint and the unconsciouschoreographic competence inducedby choreographic situations. Suspended fromautomated grids, more than 400 pendulumsare activated to initiate a sweeping 15 partcounterpoint of tempi, spacial juxtapositionand gradients of centrifugal force whichoffers the spectator a constantly morphinglabyrinth of significant complexity. The spectatorsare free to attempt a navigation thisstatistically unpredictable environment, butare requested to avoid coming in contact withany of the swinging pendulums. This task, which automatically initiates and alerts thespectators innate predictive faculties, producesa lively choreography of manifold and intricateavoidance strategies.

In the interactive video work City of Abstracts, the visitors are drawn into a mael-strom of twirling shapes, unexpectedly becomingparticipants in the action. William Forsythe has shaped contemporary dance ina unique way. His works have kept the practiceof ballet from being solely identifiedwith the classical realm, transforming it intoa dynamic art form of the twenty-first century. But his artistic practice also includesperformance, film, installations, choreographicobjects and internet-based education.

Forsythe will also present a selectionfrom his Lectures from Improvisation Technologies– a collection of 60 film studies whichcontains the most important principles of hislanguage of movement and his art of improvisation, including the film Solo, a rare opportunityto see Forsythe as a dancer.
