After the orchestra in which Diago was able to fulfil his life’s dream as a cellist is disbanded for financial reasons, the unemployed musician returns with his wife to the city in the North of Japan where he was born. By chance Diago finds a job here in a funeral parlour– where the deceased are prepared for their final journey according to the old Nokan ritual. When Diago’s wife Mika finds out about his new employment, she gives him a choice: the job or her. Director Yôjirô Takita portrays contemporary Japan caught between modernity and tradition with both respect and humour.
